How to Increase the Thickness of Your Dreads, Making Your Dreadlocks Thicker...

How to Increase the Thickness of Your Dreads, Making Your Dreadlocks ThickerIncreasing the thickness of your dreadlocks is relatively easy when they are new: that is, a month or less old. Mature dreadlocks - 6 months or older - on the other hand, are slightly more difficult to thicken, but it is still doable. The best method of thickening dreads is to combine two or more dreadlocks into one, leaving you with a forked dread or "congo."

New Dreadlocks:
Comb out the dreadlocks you wish to combine. Start combing at the tips and work towards the roots. Re-dread the combed dreadlocks. Backcomb the hair of both sections back together; they will now form one large dreadlock. Place a rubber band (available @ dreadz.co.uk) at the combined root. Place one per every inch down the dreadlock as well. This will encourage joined growth. The length of time it will take for them to combine depends on your hair type. Remove the rubber bands. Make sure to do this only once the new, joined, locked growth has formed.

Mature Dreadlocks:
Find the roots of two dreadlocks you wish to combine. Bind them together using embroidery floss or yarn. The closer to your scalp that you bind, the better. Place a hair elastic at the roots. (available @ dreadz.co.uk). Rub your roots. Hold the combined dread at the base and gently rub in different directions against your scalp. Palm-roll the combined dreads together, as one, from root to tip. To palm-roll, hold the base of the dreadlock between both of your palms and roll it back and forth as fast as you can, pressing firmly.

How to Have Shiny Dreadlocks... shine your dreads make them glossy

How to Have Shiny Dreadlocks... shine your dreads make them glossyDreadlocks are a fashionable way to style your hair, but having dreadlocks does take commitment. To have beautiful, shiny dreadlocks they need to be properly maintained and cared for. Healthy dreadlocks are easy with a few tips that can add lustre to your twisted locks. Add shine to dreadlocks and bring this ancient hairstyle up to date and glossy.

Instructions:
Shampoo with a low-residue shampoo (Knotty Boy Liquid Dread Shampoo or Knotty Boy Shampoo Bar @ dreadz.co.uk). Using a shampoo that lathers up too much soap can leave shampoo in your hair and cause build-up, making your dreadlocks appear dull and lifeless. Use lukewarm water and wash dreads gently.

Massage your head often. This will stimulate the scalp, which releases natural oils into the dreadlocks, creating shine. Just make sure your hands are free of dirt or dust before you rub your scalp.

Use dreadlock wax (Knotty Boy Dread Wax with hemp seed oil @ dreadz.co.uk) to polish up your dreads. A small amount is all that is needed to add some neatness and shine to your dreadlocks. Special dreadlock wax can be purchased at dreadz.co.uk.

Sleep with a scarf over your head every night. This will encourage more natural oil production to add lustre to your hair, as well as keep the shape of your dreadlocks intact.

question... Q? Are you and your dreadlocks FESTIVAL ready?

Q? Are you FESTIVAL ready?

It seems like only yesterday that all that Christmas malarky and fuss was going on. Wrapping presents, visiting family, and stuffing ourselves with our favourite Christmas meal... and before we know it, the Summer Festival Season is about to get under way and into full swing!

The question is... are you ready for it?

  • All Purpose Bar: You're staying away from home and you need something small that you can take with so that you can look after both your dreads... and everything else too. (the All Purpose Bars can be used to clean almost anything.)
  • Travel Soap Box: You have your All Purpose Bar... but you need something to keep it in. The travel soap box is just right for keeping your stuff soap bar lather free.
  • Dreadlock Beads: You're going to party and you want to bling up your dreads.
  • Headbands: You want to dance all day... and maybe even all night. A headband might come in handy to keep your dreads in place.
  • Hats: If you're going to Glastonbury... good luck. The festival of rain and mud is nearly here. If you want to be out all day, and you're in the rain, a dread hat is an ideal way to keep your dreads dry.

If you're going to a festival this... have fun and enjoy!

Using a Latch Hook Tool for Dreadlocks... The Latch Hook... a tool for helping pull loose hairs into their dreads. No matter whether you are pulling in loose hair at the roots, body, or tips of your dreads, the process is the same. 1). Isolate the loose hair that needs to be pulled in making sure it does, indeed, belong to the dread in question. 2). Once you isolate the hair(s) - twist them a bit to hold them together. 3). Next estimate how far up the dread the hair will get pulled and insert the latch hook in at that point. 4). Feed the latch hook through the MIDDLE of the dread and poke it out in the middle of the loose hair. 5). Place the loose hair in the hook and close the latch. 6). Holding the loose hair taut, pull the latch hook back up through the dread, pulling the loose hair with it. 7). Repeat as desired.
